A former regular columnist for the Cape Cod Times daily newspaper\, Jim is a retired history teacher and a writer of more than a dozen books about Cape Cod. Raised in Brewster\, he is a well-known lecturer on Cape-related topics. For many years he taught a popular course in Cape Cod history at the Academy. His most recent book\, Cape Cod Passage: A Novel of People and Events That Have Shaped the Narrow Land\, was published in 2022. Jim brings a love of the Cape and an eye for storytelling to his programs. Be prepared for an enjoyable talk about the history and mystery of this special place. DESCRIPTION:SPRING SOCIAL APRIL 27 TH\nThe last event of the ALL year will be the annual Spring Social at the\nCape Codder Resort and Spa\, 1225 Iyannough Rd.\, Hyannis on April 27th. The time is 5-7 p.m. The price for this event is $23 per person.  Members may sign up at the front desk or by mail starting on Monday April 3rd through Tuesday\, April 18th. You must have your check made payable to ALL when you sign up. Please sign up early – this is a catered event\, so we need\nto give the resort a final count on the 20th of April. The price includes a variety of\nappetizers (no need to eat dinner before you attend) and a ticket for a free drink of wine\,\nbeer\, or a soft drink.\nMasks are optional\, but proof of vaccination is if we don’t have one on file.\nCome and spend some time with your ALL friends before the summer starts!

DESCRIPTION:Keen amateur photographer John Ward moved to the Cape from Westchester County NY in 2008 and has been taking photographs ever since. He is a member of Cape Cod Viewfinders Camera Club and has been active as an ALL coordinator over the past five years.\n\nJohn will show 120 or so images that show the many faces of Cape Cod from his personal vantage point and will encourage questions during the one-hour presentation.\n\n\nRegistration is required for this ALL event. DESCRIPTION:Save the Date – March 19th\, 2024\, for a Special Event \nSteve Munroe will present a Special Event Zoom lecture on Tuesday\, March 19 from 12:00-1:20. \nThe title of his lecture is “Decoding the Genome: The History and Science Behind the Human Genome Project.” \nEmail lifelonglearning@capecod.edu or call 774-330-4400 to register for this event. \nSteve is Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Marquette University where he taught molecular biology and biochemistry for 35 years prior to retirement. He has lived full-time on Cape Cod since 2019. He has previously taught several courses at ALL and lectured at Snow Library\, most recently on the origin of life and the history of Earth. \nAbstract: \nThe web site of the National Institutes of Health states that “the Human Genome Project (HGP) was one of the great feats of exploration in history.” This talk will describe some of the major landmarks of this exploration extending over many decades. While officially the HGP began in 1990 and was completed in 2003\, intensive efforts to decode the information within this blueprint began decades earlier in the 1950s and extend to the present day\, with impressive progress and new challenges continuing to emerge.
