Before joining Rice\, where he held an endowed chair\, he was a professor at Yale University. Earlier he taught at the University of California\, Berkeley\, where he earned his PhD in Linguistics. He is well-known as the originator of the relational network theory of language\, also called neuro-cognitive linguistics.\n\nAccording to Wikipedia\, “Lamb is best known as the father of the relational network theory of language\, which is also known as ‘stratificational theory’. Near the turn of the millennium\, he began developing the theory further and exploring its possible relationships to neurological structures and to thinking processes.” He has devoted many years to investigating language\, mind\, thought\, perception\, computer software and hardware\, neuro-logical structure (which is quite unlike anything found in computers)\, and philosophy. His books include Pathways of the Brain (1999) and Language and Illusion (2004). He has taught ALL courses on Language\, Mind and Body\, and Mind and Music. Her job was to evaluate students and develop an education plan based on strengths and needs.\n\nJoan’s avocation has been in politics\, and she has been active in local\, state\, and national campaigns since high school. She has been in elective office\, City Council\, and on numerous boards. Since retiring to the Cape\, she has been active in women’s issues and charity work. Until recently\, Joan was a Commissioner on the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women. She is also a mediator and a mediation trainer. Joan is married and has children and grandchildren\, who all love the beach\, books\, and movies.
