Shakespeare’s The Tempest is a masterpiece of the imagination, the examination of human behavior, and the craft of playwriting. We will take our time to learn about this play from the play itself, reading scenes aloud, and investigating all that is happening on stage. The Tempest is one of the jewels of the Elizabethan and world theaters, and will richly reward us for our efforts to experience and understand it. Any text of the play will do, but the Folger Shakespeare library paperback is recommended.
Coordinator: Roger Shoemaker
Roger has a BA in Dramatic Literature from Yale and an MFA in Directing from Catholic University. He taught and directed at Trinity College, Hartford CT, and was Artistic Director of a professional summer theater there. He is Dean for the Arts emeritus from Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and recently retired as Director of Drama at Dennis-Yarmouth High School. In addition to directing over 100 plays, Roger has written over 40 reviews for the Cape Cod Times. Conveniently, he directed a production of The Tempest as the thesis show for his MFA degree.
Here Roger discusses his previous course “Why a Rhinoceros? The Plays of Ionesco.”
