Ethics: What It Is and Why We Need It

This six-week course will begin by examining the source of ethics in family, religion, education and philosophy, and by introducing recognized ethical principles and decision-making models. The following weeks will each be devoted to analyzing and discussing a case in a different sphere of public or professional life, such as media ethics, bioethics, internet and technology ethics, business ethics, and political ethics. Students should leave the course with a better understanding of the pressures and values at play in ethical decision-making, including their own. The course will include online readings and videos.

Until retiring in August 2023, Howie taught journalism for 37 years at SUNY New Paltz. He has written and edited books on ethics, including Media Ethics Goes to the Movies, Desperately Seeking Ethics, and Ethics and Entertainment. He has a Ph.D. in American Culture from University of Michigan, an M.A. in Journalism from University of Iowa, and a B.A. in English from Bard College.
