The Wonder of Flight – Part 1

This course will trace the history of flight up through 1939. Week 1: Kites, myths, balloons, gliders. Week 2: The advent of powered flight. Week 3: Rapid technological progress during World War I. Weeks 4 through 6: The “golden age” of aviation from 1919 through 1939—barnstormers, airmail, record breaking flights, airships, birth of the airlines, evolution of the airplane from a wood and fabric bi-plane to a sleek high-speed metal monoplane, and prelude to war.  Class presentations will include PowerPoint and short videos. Part 2 of this course will be offered in the spring semester.

Dave is a retired commercial pilot and naval aviator. He flew for Delta Airlines for 33 years and in the Navy (active and reserve) for 20 years. Dave has co-coordinated “Great Decisions” twice at ALL and is a huge fan of this marvelous program. He is excited to share his enthusiasm for one of mankind’s greatest achievements.
